Primary Responsibilities:

Novak Construction Company, a highly-regarded, privately-held firm, is seeking a Controller. This position is responsible for supervising all primary accounting functions for the company: payroll, income taxes, monthly and year-end financial reporting, cash management, A/P/R. This individual must possess the highest degree of integrity, exercise sound judgment at all times, and exhibit an unwavering attention to detail/accuracy. The Controller reports to the Chief Financial Officer.

Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Direct and oversee the financial and job cost reconciliation and reporting, as well as the WIP schedule within company’s current software: Sage 300;
  • Manage a 5-member accounting team that is responsible for processing sworn statements, subcontractor payments and billing to owners, and ensuring accounting procedures and controls are followed;
  • Work closely with the Project Directors and Project Managers to verify and manage budgets vs. actual job costs and percentage of completion;
  • Maintain and manage collective bargaining agreements, insurance coverage and benefits plans;
  • Design, implement, and ensure internal controls;
  • Responsible for Union and year-end audits, coordination of preparation of supporting schedules, and the preparation of financial information for external tax preparers;
  • Oversee cash management functions;
  • Provide information and data to CFO for monthly reviews with Project Directors;
  • Supervise and monitor A/P process, produce/review all credit applications and review all checks for validity/accuracy;
  • Monitor Accounts Receivable aging;
  • Review bank recs, and analyze statements, account balances and projects’ construction draws; and
  • Execute special projects as directed by the President or CFO.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Overall, 12+ years experience from a construction, real estate development, or public accounting firm; min. of 10 years in an accounting management role;
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting; current CPA license beneficial
  • Highly proficient with MS Office software, particularly Excel and Sage;
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills;
  • Aptitude to be detail-oriented, yet flexible, in a dynamic environment with changing priorities and simultaneous deadlines;
  • Possesses excellent collaborative skills to work in partnership with colleagues;
  • Strong work ethic with the highest degree of honesty, integrity, and discretion; and
  • Prior work experience in a privately-held construction will prove beneficial, but not required.
